With so many people in need all over the world, we can sometimes forget the people in need in our own backyard. There are more than 49 million Americans who are at risk of hunger in our country. For many of us, it’s a reality that’s hard to grasp. Fortunately, it’s also a problem we can solve.
Meet Wenona, a 9-yr-old from Indiana who is learning about healthy eating while having a fun time. She attends a summer feeding program that provides free lunch for kids during the summer, when parents often have to stretch their budgets to provide the extra meal kids receive for free during the school year.
“My mom’s gone without so many times,” Wenona says, “because she feels my sister and I are not getting enough food.” Millions of Americans are just like Wenona, which makes Feeding America so important to local communities across the nation.
Feeding America is a nationwide network of food banks that feeds more than 37 million people through food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters in communities across America and leads the nation in the fight against hunger.
At Unilever, we have been lucky enough to be one of Feeding America’s biggest partners. Over the past five years, with brands like Lipton, Hellmann's and Ben + Jerry's, Unilever has contributed more than 17 million pounds of product and $3.3 million to help Feeding America get more food to people in need.
