Building a future
beyond HIV/AIDS with Thokomala
We wouldn’t think twice about protecting our children from getting so much as a cold but millions of parents living with HIV/AIDS face the heart-breaking reality that they may leave their children without the love, protection and guidance they need to build safe, successful lives.
14 million children in sub-Saharan Africa are orphaned to AIDS and in Zimbabwe and Botswana 70% of children lose their parents to the disease. These children not only have to live without the love and support of a parent, but they have to find their own way through uncertainty. There may not be a cure for AIDS yet, but we still have the power to help rewrite the future of millions of children, right now.
With screening, support and treatment for Unilever employees and dependants, 4,000 lives have already been saved, but we know we can do even more, which is why we have partnered with Thokomala.
Thokomala is a charity that seeks to nurture and nourish children who have been orphaned by HIV and AIDS. Meaning ‘warmth’ or ‘care’ in isiZulu, Thokomala doesn’t just provide food and shelter, it offers children love and emotional support by rebuilding a family in community family homes. Siblings are kept together and the homes are in their community of orphans ensuring they stay in touch with their roots. By providing the right support, and a loving family environment, Thokomala can help children break the cycle and build rich lives for themselves, free from the threat of HIV/AIDS.
Unilever is helping to support Thokomala’s life saving work as well as developing a global HIV/AIDS programme which is committed to the goal of ‘Getting to Zero’ – zero discrimination, zero new infections, zero deaths from HIV/AIDS.
