Challenge your family to see the possibilities of using one ingredient five different ways, decreasing food waste in your household.
Did you know that each year the world produces about 1,477 pounds of edible food for every person on the planet, but only about half of that is ever eaten?
As part of the Summer Sunlight Activities, help your family reduce the amount of food wasted. Why not challenge your children to plan and choose the meals for the week using one ingredient in five different ways?
For example, how many different variations can your little chef make with potatoes as the ingredient of the week? To start your planning, here's a little inspiration from Unilever's family of brands:
Bacon-Potato Ceasar Salad: This twist on the classic Caesar salad is hearty enough to be a meal on its own.
Leek and Potato Soup: Simply serve this soup chunky – don't pass it through a sieve – with a piece of crusty bread.
Parmesan Chive Potato Bake: Cheese, herbs, potatoes baked to a bubbly perfection – how could you go wrong?
Shepherd's Pie: If you have leftover mashed potatoes, this is a great way to create an entirely new meal – but it's also worth making the potatoes just for this.
Potato Poblano Enchiladas: Add a little Mexican flavor to your dinner routine with these zesty, hearty enchiladas.
By planning ahead, you'll not only be educating your children about food waste, but you'll also be able to enjoy all your family's favorite foods without throwing much in the trash bin. Who knows, you might even find a budding chef in the process!
